About The Collection

This is a publication about rare desirable records: records where fewer people own them than want them, according to Discogs. Rather than financial value, this collection bases itself on the rarity and desirability of the record.

The paradox of these records is that the more people want them, the less tends to be written about them. They exist in want lists and auction results, but rarely in the context of its story. Every release covered here gets the full treatment: a reported journalistic piece, an academic essay placing the record in its historical context, and a video essay.

The context for each record is the thing that makes it collectable: whether that is the factory that pressed it, its label design, etc. The opening of every piece could be told by anyone connected to the record’s physical identity, whether that is a musician, an engineer, or the radio who had it as a promo.

This website and its owner subjects themselves to the Society of Professional Journalist’s Code of Ethics.

I hope you enjoy,
